There's also a stereo version of this compressor called th 1178. The "all buttons in" feature is great and really puts what I would call "stress" to the sound.very funky and vibey. It's a great vocal compressor, bass compressor, drum compressor, guitar compressor, you name and it can impart a cool sound if that's the sound you're looking for. This compressor is not the most "hi-fi" unit in operation but really has a vibe to it. You've also heard this compressor on a billion records. It's very versatile and good for semi-subtle compression but great at all out ****ing-shit-up. This compressor is known for its quicker attack and release settings and its somewhat non-linear aggressive qualities. UA reissued it to favorable reviews although I've never used one.ฤก176 - Varies depending on what revision you have (from the conveted "Blue Stripe" originals to the not so coveted UA reissues). Very smooth and subtle action that can silk things up nice. I've occasionally found it good on bass, but haven't found many other applications for it. Very simple design with input gain and threshold controls (as well as a compress/limit switch, basically a ratio thing). It's tube based (with transformers as well) so it does color the sound a little bit. This compressor has been on the lead vocal of countless records over the years. LA-2A - Known for its inherent slow release and smooth compression qualities.
